Retinal vein occlusion is a common condition where a vein of the retina becomes blocked. It can lead to swelling of the retina which can reduce/blur your vision. If left untreated, it can lead to permanent blindness.
There are two forms of vein occlusion depending upon the location of the blockage. Central Retinal Vein Occlusion or Branch Retinal Vein Occlusion.
Risk factors for retinal vein occlusions are:
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- Glaucoma
- Diabetes
- Smoking
- Certain rare blood disorders
Treatment of retinal vein occlusion
Swelling at the centre of the retina (the macula) is the main cause of loss of central vision from a vein occlusion. The swelling is caused by damaged blood vessels which bleed and leak fluid. Treatment options aimed at preventing further vision loss include intravitreal eye injections or laser treatment depending upon individual circumstances and the type of vein occlusion.
